These are words you learn when you're first learning English, but wouldn't it be better to use alternatives of these words, which help you sound more natural, more interesting and more cool?

There you go, what a wonderful expression, instead of just saying thank you.

さぁ 来ました　素晴らしい表現でしょ　"thank you" の代わりになるんです

This is quite extreme, um, which means obviously I would thank you, I would be grateful for the rest of my life.

これは けっこう極端な表現で　その意味は　生涯 相手に感謝する　ありがたいと思う です

A bit much? Maybe.

ちょっと大げさ？　そうかも

Okay, so let's go with a couple of really, really common ones.

じゃ　ものすごく一般的なのを 2、3 いってみましょう

The most common way of saying thank you in British English is 'cheers'.

イギリス英語で "thank you" の代わりに言う 最も一般的な表現は "cheers" です

'Hey, hey cheers.'

「あ、どうもね」

A lot of people know this word because it's what you say when you have a glass of wine or a beer, and you say to the other person, 'cheers', right?

この単語を知っている人はたくさんいます　ワインとかビールとかを片手に　周りの人に言う (乾杯の意味の) "cheers" ですよね？　

But also, it's a very, very common way of saying thank you in English.

でも　英語でありがとうを言うのに　ごくごく一般的に使われるんです

Probably the most common way is simply, 'thanks'.

たぶん 最も一般的なのは　シンプルに "thanks" ですね

It's a short version of thank you.

"thank you" の短い版

Where I'm from in the north of England, we have an even shorter version of this, and it is 'ta'!

僕はイングランド北部出身なので　さらに短いバージョンがあるんです　それは "ta" ！

'Ta!' 'Ta very much!'

"どうも!" "ホントにどうも！"　

Thanks very much. It's nice, it's colloquial, it's northern; you probably won't hear it in the south of England.

「ホントどうもね」　感じの良い　くだけた　北部の方の表現です　たぶんイングランド南部では耳にすることはないでしょう

You definitely won't hear it in the States, but I love it.

アメリカでは絶対に聞かないだろうけど　僕は大好き

'Ta!' 'Ta very much!'

"どうも!" "ホントにどうも！"　

Okay, now let's take the word thanks, and now we can add some words after this to make a few different expressions.

さて "thanks" ですが　この後にいくつか言葉を足して　違った表現にしてみましょう

'Thanks' just means thank you.

"thanks" は純粋に「ありがとう (= thank you)」という意味

If we want to make this stronger, we can say, 'thanks a lot.'

もっと気持ちを込めたかったら　"thanks a lot (本当にありがとう)"

We can also say, 'thanks a bunch.'

こうも言えます　"thanks a bunch (メチャありがとう)"

'Thanks a bunch.'

「メチャありがとう」

And if we want to make it even stronger, we can say 'thanks a million.'

さらに気持ちを込めたい時は　"thanks a million (メチャメチャありがとう)"

'Thanks a million.'

「メチャメチャありがとう」

One that I hear students using quite often is 'thank you so much'.

よく生徒が言っているのを耳にするのは "thank you so much (本当にありがとうございます)"

It's fine.

問題ありません

We do use that, but I think students often use it more than they should because 'thank you so much' is very, very extreme.

僕たちも その表現は使います　でも必要以上に使っていると思うんです　"thank you so much" って　ものすごく強い表現なんですよね

It's like thank you so much.

「ほんと～うに　ありがとうございます！」みたいな感じ

But you know, I've heard students say this when I give them a pencil.

でも　生徒に鉛筆を渡した時に　こう言っているのを聞いたことがあるんです

'Greg, can I have a pencil?'

「グレッグ、鉛筆貸してくれる？」

'There you go.'

「はい どうぞ」

'Thank you so much.'

「ほんと～うに　ありがとうございます！」

Definitely too much.

絶対 言い過ぎ

And another one is 'thanks ever so much'.

あと "thanks ever so much. (メチャメチャありがとう)" なんてのもあります

'Thanks ever so much.'

「メチャメチャありがとう」

I really like this expression.

僕は この言い方すごく気に入ってるんです

You can use it for everything - It's not just for extreme things.

何にでも使えますよ　- ちょっとしたことにでも使えるんです

That's a really nice expression to use.

すごく便利に使える表現です

'Thanks ever so much.'

「メチャメチャありがとう」

Okay, let's use the word 'appreciate'.

さて　"appreciate" という言葉を使ってみましょう

Now, we've got a couple of expressions.

2 つの言い方があります

One is 'much appreciated'. 'Much appreciated.'

1 つ目は "Much appreciated. (心から感謝してます)"

And another one is 'I really appreciate it'.

もう 1 つは "I really appreciate it. (本当に感謝しています)"

You know, thanks for the cookies you brought to my house yesterday.

こんな感じです「昨日 うちに持ってきてくれたクッキーありがとね」

'I-I really appreciate it.'

「本当に感謝してるよ」

At the beginning of this video, I used the word 'grateful'.

この動画の最初の方で　"grateful" という単語を使いました

I said I would be eternally grateful if you subscribe to my channel and give this video a thumbs up.

「この動画を気に入ってくれた方は　いいね！とチャンネル登録をしてくれたら　一生 恩に着ます」と言いました

'Grateful.'

"grateful (感謝する)"

So, 'I would be eternally grateful' is, yeah, it's a big deal.

「一生恩に着る」は　そうですね　大ごとですね

If you want to be more normal and just use the word grateful, you could say 'I'm really grateful' or 'I'm so grateful'.

もっと普通の表現で "grateful" という言葉を使いたいなら　"I'm really grateful. (本当に感謝している)" とか "I'm so grateful. (すごく感謝している)" と言うことができるでしょう

If you want to specify why you are grateful, use the preposition 'for' plus 'a noun'.

感謝の理由を具体的に伝えたい時は　前置詞の "for" ＋「名詞」の形を使ってください

'I'm so grateful for your help.'

「手伝ってくれて すごく感謝しています」

'I'm so grateful for your time.'

「一緒に過ごしてくれて すごく感謝しています」

The next one is a very common expression we use when somebody gives us a present.

次は　誰かにプレゼントをもらった時に とてもよく使う表現です

You receive a present and you say, 'you shouldn't have.'

プレゼントを貰ったらこう言います　"you shouldn't have. (良かったのに)"

'You shouldn't have.'

「良かったのに」

Like, literally, you shouldn't have taken the time and effort to buy me a present.

言葉の通り　わざわざ時間と労力を使ってプレゼントを買ってくれたりしなくて良かったのに ということ

'You shouldn't have.'

「良かったのに」

And, obviously, we are not saying, 'Hey, don't buy me a present next year.'

ただ　お分かりの通り「来年はプレゼントを買うなよ」と言っているわけではありません

It's just an expression, which means you've been really nice here.

これは単なる表現のひとつで　意味としては「あなたは本当にいい人ですね

I didn't expect it from you, so you shouldn't have.

思ってもみなかったです　そんなことしなくて良かったのに」という感じ

Okay, a couple with the word 'kind'.

よし　"kind" という単語を使ったものを２つ

'I' 'I' 'I'. Kind not 'kind'. 'Kind.'

/aɪ/ /aɪ/ /aɪ/ 　/kaɪnd/ です　「キンド」じゃなくて「カインド」

One is 'that's so kind'.

一つ目は "that's so kind. (ご親切に)"

'That's so kind.'

「ご親切に」

Or we could also say, 'you're too kind.'

または　こうも言えます　"you're too kind. (なんて親切なんだ)"

'Oh, thank you. You're too kind.'

「ありがとう　なんて親切なんだ」

'You're too kind.'

「なんて親切なんだ」

Now, saying you are ... is also a very common way of saying thank you.

さて　"you are ～" も ありがとうを言う時に　すごくよく使われます

We've got 'you are too kind'.

"You are too kind. (なんて親切なんだ)"

We could also say, 'you're a star.'

こう言っても良いですよ　"you're a star. (君って素敵)"

'You're a star.'

「君って素敵」

Like, you are excellent, you're so helpful, you're so kind, you're a star.

「あなたって最高」「すごく頼りになるね」「親切だね」「君って素敵」みたいな感じです

And another one is 'you're a legend'.

あとひとつ "you're a legend. (君はレジェンドだ)" です

'Oh, thanks, mate. You are a legend.'

「お、ありがとな　お前はレジェンドだ」

We can also say, 'you're the best.'

さらに "you're the best. (君が一番だ)" とも言えます　

'You're the best.'

「君が一番だ」

And if the thing that the person does that you want to say thank you for, if that really saves you from, like a bad situation; let's imagine you have lost your key and you can't get in your house, so a friend drives across the city to give you an extra key.

何かをしてもらって感謝の気持ちを伝えたい場合　それが良くない状況から救ってくれた場合などですね　例えば想像してみてください　鍵を失くして家に入れなくて　友達が街の向こう側から合鍵を持ってきてくれるみたいなのです

Oh, 'he saves your life'.

"he saves your life. (彼が君の命を救ってくれた)"

'He saves your life.'

「彼が君の命を救ってくれた」

Not literally, but, come on, he saves you.

本当にそうだったわけではありません　でもほら　彼が救ってくれたんです

So you could say, 'you're a lifesaver.'

だから　こんなふうにも言えます　"you're a lifesaver. (あなたは命の恩人だ)"

'You're a lifesaver.'

「あなたは命の恩人だ」

Right, we also have: 'I can't thank you enough.' Thank you.

こんなのもあります　"I can't thank you enough (感謝してもしきれないよ)" ありがとう

'I can't thank you enough.'

「感謝してもしきれないよ」

Like, I want to thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, but there is no limit to my gratitude.

ありがとう！ありがとう！ありがとう！ありがとう！ありがとう！感謝の気持ちが止まらない みたいなね

I can't thank you enough.

「感謝してもしきれないよ」

And the next one is 'if you do me a favour'.

次の表現は　「頼みごとをしてくれたら、

'If you do me a favour', I could say, 'I owe you one.'

頼みを聞いてくれたら」こう言います　"I owe you one. (恩に着るよ)"

'I owe you one.'

「恩に着るよ」

'I owe you one.'

「恩に着るよ」

And this literally means 'I owe you a favour'.

これは 言葉の通り「あなたに借りができた」

So, next time, it's my turn to do you a favour.

次は僕が助ける番だ　ということ

All right, the most common mistake I hear is when people are speaking to me and they say 'many thanks'.

さて　最もよくある間違いで　話しかけられた時に耳にするのですが　"many thanks" って言うんですよね

'Many thanks' is not really an expression we use in spoken English.

"many thanks" は英語の話し言葉では あまり使われない表現なんです

We do, however, use it in written English, and it's a very common way of ending an email.

ただし　書き言葉では使います　e メールの締めくくりに　とてもよく使われますよ

'Many thanks, Greg.'

"感謝を込めて　グレッグ"

So save 'many thanks' for your written English.

なので　"many thanks" は文章を書く時に取っておいてくださいね

So, they are your twenty British expressions to say thank you.
